If you care about your recordings, it’s important not to cut corners when choosing a master CD. To understand why you should use a high-quality master CD, you must first understand how a CD-R works.

Each CD-R contains four primary layers:

1. Polycarbonate Layer - The purpose of this layer is to direct the light of the laser for burning and reading.
2. Recording Dye Layer - This layer contains cyanine & phthalocyanine dyes that are photo (light) sensitive. When a CD-R is recorded these dyes are heated by the writing laser and become opaque through a chemical reaction to the heat. This layer must be sensitive to laser light, but resist impressions made by normal light.
3. Reflective Layer - When the laser is applied to the disc, this layer reflects the laser. The quality of this layer is determined by its reflective qualities and its resistance to reacting with the recording dyes.
4. Top Coat - The top coat is the protective surface of the CD-R. It protects the reflective layer and is the most vulnerable part of the CD-R (more so than the bottom of the CD – a common misconception).
   Unlike replicated CDs you find when you purchase a CD at the store, CD-Rs are more at risk for being damaged and losing the data stored on them from humidity, handling, and deterioration over time.

Simply put, the better each of these layers, the better the CD. With the highest quality materials and construction of these layers, you will have fewer failed recordings and the data on your CD will simply last longer.
